PLEASANT HILL — A free day packed full of guided hikes, kids’ nature programs, fishing, waterfalls, vista views and plenty of fresh air is planned at Shaker Village on Saturday.
Adventure Day has something for everyone throughout the 3,000-acre space. The kids can go outdoors to explore the creek in search of rarely-seen critters. Participants can have an up¿close encounter with birds of prey; paddle up the Dix River; spend the morning identifying breeding birds, and the afternoon honing geocaching skills; or saddle a horse and spend a full day riding the trails.
“Adventure Day at Shaker Village is a great opportunity to get in touch with nature,” said Aimee Darnell, publicist for Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. “It’s a day to take a break from the stresses of everyday life. The Shakers made time for fun. You should, too.”
Guests also can participate in special activities that celebrate the Shakers’ annual break from their daily chores. Sack races, games, and special interactive music and dancing, are part of the festivities.
Admission is required for tour, riverboat and wagon rides.
Shaker Village will offer an evening picnic cruise to the Blue Heron Rookery from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Guests can enjoy an old-time picnic dinner while cruising through the Kentucky River Palisades to a rarely seen Great Blue Heron rookery during nesting season. Admission is $60 per person.
Community partners supporting the event are Fort Harrod Back Country Horsemen, Southwestern High School Raptor Rehabilitation Center, Kentucky Horse Council, Louisville Area Canoe and Kayak, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Nicholasville Road Walmart and Wilderness Trace Ducks Unlimited.
