A day in Northern Ireland: Local playwright Elizabeth Orndorff to share her Sister City experience Wednesday at Lunch with the Arts at the Community Arts Center

Wednesday, the Boyle County Public Library’s Friends of the Library and the Community Arts Center will co-host this month’s Lunch with the Arts guest, Liz Orndorff. The program is set for 4 p.m. in the library. The local playwright traveled to Danville’s sister city of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, as part of an artist exchange facilitated by the Danville Sister Cities Commission.

Orndorff explains the purpose of her trip was “to experience the life of the people of Carrickfergus and to exchange ideas and activities with artists and schoolchildren of Northern Ireland.” This exchange involved visits with local school groups who participated in drama workshops and visits to Maghaberry Prison to work with inmates. Orndorff’s trip was an unforgettable and life-changing experience, one she will share candidly at this month’s presentation.

Her presentation will stem from her collection of colorful photographs of Carrickfergus, Belfast, and the Antrim coast, as well as what she calls “an extensive display of all things Irish. Guests can expect to hear about Carrickfergus and Belfast, their history and geography, special wonders such as the Titanic Museum, and about my work in the schools of Carrickfergus.”

For anyone who has wondered more about Carrickfergus, this is the place and time to learn, especially about its significance as Danville’s sister city. Orndorff explains, “going to Carrickfergus was like going home — there is a special connection between Danville and the people of Northern Ireland since so many Kentucky families originated there.”

Some highlights Orndorff can be expected to touch on Wednesday include her visits to Carrickfergus Castle and St. Nicholas Church, both built in the 12th century; attending the theater with the Belfast’s mayor; and visiting President Andrew Jackson’s family home.
