The Community Arts Center is gearing up for its 3rd annual juried exhibit, Horizon: Contemporary Landscapes — an exhibit designed to expose local artists and art-lovers to excellent national artwork while putting Danville on the map as a place where artists can find inspiration. The exhibit helps local artists become competitive outside of this area by teaching them how to participate in a juried exhibition while offering high-quality art to interested individuals and businesses.
Why landscape?
Programming director Brandon Long explains the theme of contemporary landscape allows for both traditional and experimental work. The wide variety of approaches to this common theme is one of Long’s favorite aspects of the exhibit; some artists stick to pastoral themes while others portray cityscapes or more abstract subjects. And while most people think of an art show as a collection of rectangular paintings, artists submit everything from collage and photography to mixed media and cast metal sculptures.
Long is also incredibly excited about this year’s judges — for the first time there are a pair of judges rather than just one. Bill Fletcher and Lynn Dunbar are artists who specialize in landscape paintings and who have exhibited work at the Arts Center. These jurors are looking for works of art that display creativity, strength of execution and a well-rounded range of artistic style and interpretation. Long suggests that “artists should submit work to challenge themselves, get great exposure, meet new artists and last but not least to be eligible for the cash prizes (up to $500).”
The exhibit isn’t just a great opportunity for artists to show their work; it also brings high-caliber work to the people of Boyle County. While many might assume that they have to drive to Lexington or Louisville for an art show of this quality, the Horizon exhibit debunks that myth. Long explains, “I think that visitors will walk away with renewed interest in the world around them and a respect for the various ways of interpreting it after seeing the artists’ work.”
How to enter
The deadline for art submissions is Aug. 31. Artists can go to www.communityartscenter.net/calltoartists for details on entry fees, rules of submission, juror info and awards. Submitting artists must create a username and password to upload work.
Visitors can view the exhibit Oct.3-Nov 15. An artist’s reception will be held 6-8 pm. Oct. 11.
