100 years ago — 1912
The Interior Journal declares that Congressman Helm has not promised any jobs to his supporters, but that amounts to nothing. George Willis, of Shelbyville was in Danville recently pleading for voters to support Helm on the grounds that he will be his private secretary. A Harrodsburg friend came to The Advocate and asked the newspaper to help Helm on the grounds that a Harrodsburg friend of ours had been promised the Collectorship if Helm’s influence could land it for him. It is currently rumored that at two Danville men have been promised Congressman Helm’s influence for the Collectorship. Now, let Mr. Helm publicly declare that he has made no promises of any kind and we will show him up.
It will come as pleasant news to the many patrons of Crab Orchard summer resort that the management has hired “high class” musicians for the summer. And, several members of the Centre College orchestra, including Edgar Bates, George Hopper, John Price and Robert Lassing, have agreed to play for the great ball on Friday evening. Mr. Bates has been at Crab Orchard for a number of seasons and the public is well acquainted with his unusual ability. A large number of Danville people spend a few weeks at the famous Crab Orchard Springs every year.
The colored citizens of Danville met and decided to hold a fair this year. It will take place the second week after the white fair, August 21, 22 and 23.
A short time ago, the lifeless and mangled body of Vergil Tharp was found on the railroad tracks near Junction City. At first, it was naturally thought that the unfortunate man had been run down by the train sometime during the night. However, because of the position and location of the body, would seem to belie this statement. Now, it is believed that he was robbed first then killed.
75 years ago — 1937
Residents of Junction City were assured a $25,000 high type of highway between that community and Shelby City, a distance of about one mile, will be built soon. The construction will extend the present road being built from Junction City to Parksville, via Alum Springs. Also, Boyle County will place two miles of blacktop on the White Oak Road and then on Catholic Knob and down the Fork and over the knob to Mitchellsburg.
The Goodall Company has offered to donate $25,000 for building a recreational center in Danville including a swimming pool, tennis courts, etc. The Goodall company, which will soon open its new factory for the tailoring of Palm Beach suits, suggested that the town cooperate with the Works Progress Administration and secure federal money to match their gift.
Cleanliness is a commendable habit, but using another man’s bathtub without permission is a slight solecism against society, as well as an infraction of the law. Recently Zeke Brooks was fined $10 on a charge of drunkeness in public. He had been arrested after a neighbor complained that Zeke had used a ladder to climb into the window of his bathroom and there performed his ablutions. Zeke said it was a matter of mistaken location. He thought he was using his own bathtub, despite his unique manner in which he approached it.
