BCTC students are scholarship recipients

LEXINGTON — Two students from Bluegrass Community & Technical College have been selected as 2012Coca-ColaCommunity College Academic Team Scholars.

Out of 1,700 applicants, Brandon Smith was selected as a Bronze Scholar and Kandi Bennett was selected as a Silver Scholar.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 scholars in three categories.The organization provides nearly $187,500 in scholarships annually. Bronze Scholars receive a $1,000 scholarship and special medallion. Silver Scholars also receive a medallion and $1,250.

The scholars will be recognized at a ceremony on campus.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society administers the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program and recognizes scholars during All-State Community College Academic Team Recognition ceremonies. Two nominations from each college were accepted. Scholars are selected by an independent panel of judges, which considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service.

 

Honor society

Amber Lynne Wiley, daughter of Debbie and Mike Wiley of Pikeville, was inducted into Eastern Kentucky University’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society on April 6. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society and the highest academic honor to which EKU students may aspire. Wiley is pursuing a master’s degree in public health with an emphasis in environment health science. Wiley, who has a 4.0 GPA, will present her master’s theis on grey water recycling for irrigation purposes during the sumer session, after which she will earn her graduate degree.
