Boyle County waste management and emergency officials are joining forces to hold a household hazardous waste disposal day Saturday at the county fairgrounds.
A $20,500 grant from the state Division of Waste Management is funding the effort. But, depending on how many people show up at the beginning of the effort, it is possible that the hazardous waste disposal day could end early due to financial constraints, according to Donna Fechter, director of solid waste and recycling.
The effort is only designed for residential waste disposal. Officials usually collect a wide range of potentially dangerous household liquids, including paint and bleach. When residents simply pour unwanted chemicals down a drain or place them outside with their regular garbage, they are putting other people as well as the environment at risk, Fechter said. The safety of volunteers, employees and the general public is paramount to smoothly running the event, Fechter added.
“Nobody will be allowed to get out of their vehicles,” she said. “Unknown and unmarked cylinders will not be accepted.”
The event is also not an appropriate place to dispose of prescription drugs, needles, syringes, guns, ammunition, or motor oil. Local law enforcement officials handle the disposal of medications and weapons; county health department officials deal with needles and syringes. Local auto parts stores are usually a good resource for disposing motor oil, Fechter said.
County emergency personnel will also be on site; all participants must fill out a brief form and have proof of Boyle residency.
