A Danville man was airlifted to a Lexington hospital this afternoon after being stabbed inside his Goggan Lane home by his grandson.
Harold Long, 79, of 2545 Goggan Lane, was stabbed multiple times, said Danville Police Chief Tony Gray. It wasn’t immediately clear how many times and where Long was punctured — and he was conscious and talking — but Gray said that because of his age and unrelated medical conditions “the injuries could be considered life-threatening.”
The incident was called in about 2 p.m. and Long’s grandson, Charles Vanhook, 37, of 209 Holiday Drive, was taken into custody shortly afterward as he tried to flee, Gary said about 3 p.m.
Vanhook had not yet been charged, but could face a charge of first-degree assault or attempted murder, depending on the outcome of the investigation, the chief said.
Gray said it was not clear what started the altercation. Harold Long’s son, James Long, who was on the scene, said Vanhook has long been treated for mental illness.
Harold Long’s wife, Shirley Long, also was home when the assault occurred in the dining room of the couple’s home, Gray said.
