A Danville man is still behind bars for allegedly firing an errant gunshot Sunday night that police said narrowly missed his neighbor in an apartment next door.
Officers responded to apartments at 32 E. Madison Ave. shortly before 11 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Sherry and Clifford Napier, residents of one of the apartments, said they heard a loud noise, then saw damage to a wall in an upstairs bedroom that appeared to come from a gunshot.
Investigators found a bullet hole coming from the next-door apartment of Lee Muller, 36. According to police, Muller had been trying to show a friend how to use a gun but didn’t check to see if the gun had a round in the chamber.
It appeared a bullet came from Muller’s apartment, entered the apartment of the victims, ricocheted off a piece of furniture and lodged in a nearby wall. Clifford Napier was less than 5 feet away from the location where the bullet came through the wall in the adjoining apartment.
Muller, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, was suffering from a gunshot wound to his hand when he was located by police. He was treated at the scene by Boyle County Emergency Medical Service for a minor injury.
Muller was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment and lodged in the Boyle County Detention Center. He is being held on a $5,000 cash bond.
Jackqualine Hampton, 21, of Liberty also was arrested at the scene on an unrelated warrant for failure to appear in court on a misdemeanor. She also was booked into the Boyle County Detention Center.
