The Student Government Association at Centre College has organized a “Debate Carnival,” beginning at 5 p.m. Friday on the Breckinridge Hall lawn on campus. The event is open to the community as well as the Centre population.
“We wanted to do something designed for Centre students that would channel all the excitement, so everyone can participate and celebrate something that will be the highlight of our college careers,” SGA President Patrick Cho, class of 2013, says.
The Debate Carnival will be similar in nature to the Carnival Centre holds each spring. The theme is for this carnival is American County Fair. There will be inflatables, a mechanical bull, a rock wall, a bungee trampoline and a green screen where people can have a picture taken with the candidates.
There will also be concerts by both the Kentucky Music Ensemble and MP, two Centre-based folk bands, as well as tables set up by Centre’s various clubs and organizations.
Community organizations also are invited to set up tables and be part of the fun. SGA has been tapping into all of its different resources in order to get as much involvement as it can.
“This is an opportunity for SGA to reach out to the whole community,” Cho says. “We encourage all organizations to be as creative as possible.”
Cowan Dining Hall also is taking part in the festivities. On the day of the carnival, Sodexo will be serving special food that highlights the American County Fair theme, such as funnel cakes, and hosting its own events, including a pie-eating contest.
“The idea behind the Debate Carnival is to bring the community together and to celebrate our school hosting an event of national importance, this moment in our college careers, and to simply enjoy ourselves,” Cho notes.
“Personally, I am most excited to see what Centre organizations will bring to the event. We have so many clever people in these vibrant organizations. Also, the mechanical bull will be fun,” he adds. “I would pay money to see President Roush give it a try.”
