With summer just around the corner, swimming pools turned into a lengthy discussion Monday for Danville City Commission.
City Engineer Earl Coffey presented Brandstetter Carroll Inc.’s suggestions on how to repair the pool at the William E. "Bunny" Davis Recreation Complex.
The pool has substantial leaks believed to be in the “shell” of the pool, which have been repaired by patches here and there.
The patches are cracking, and the Danville-Boyle Parks and Recreation Department has looked into fixing the leaks by installing a new liner.
But the suggestion from Brandstetter Carroll’s Monica Sumner was to look at an alternative to the liner.
The alternative would be an acrylic modified plaster coating called Aquafin, which would be a short-term solution that costs about $10 per square foot including installation.
“So at this time the path that the city staff is taking, unless you tell us not to, is we we’re going to proceed in the repair Sumner’s recommended,” Coffey said.
“We intend to make repairs to the pool this spring,” he added.
There is no estimate yet on how much the repairs will cost, but Coffey said the staff is working with contractors and speculates they will be less than $15,000.
Parks and Recreation Director John Drake spoke in favor of a liner, saying although it wouldn’t be a “catch-all,” it would provide a 10-year timespan to make other repairs.
“We’ve been patching for years,” Drake said. “This isn’t the first time I’ve been in here talking about this liner. There was a time I was told when I walked out of one of these meetings that there was $30,000 in a fund and we would roll that over to the next year and it would be $60,000 and we would knock this liner out two years ago. And that didn’t happen.”
After much discussion weighing the two options, city commissioners decided 3-1 to repair the pool using Aquafin. Commissioner James Atkins voted “no.”
However, the commission requested that information be gathered on the cost to make total repairs to the pool.
In other business:
The facility would make Danville competitive in an area where it’s currently lacking, Coffey said.
Local high schools, Centre College and families around the region would benefit from the facility.
“We’ve got a real winner,” Kirchner said of Slaughter, the general manager of Quality Inn, Danville.
