A Danville man remained in serious condition Saturday after allegedly being stabbed in the neck and back by his grandson inside his Goggin Lane home Friday afternoon.
Harold Long, 78, of 2545 Goggin Lane, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center after being stabbed multiple times with a knife about 2 p.m. Friday in the dining room of his home, said Danville Police Chief Tony Gray.
Long’s grandson, Charles Vanhook, 37, of 209 Holiday Drive, was taken into custody without incident shortly afterward at a neighbor’s home, where he stopped to wait for police.
Vanhook is being held without bond in the Boyle County Detention Center after being charged with attempted murder and kidnapping.
Harold Long’s son, James Long, who was at his father’s home Friday after the stabbing occurred, said Vanhook has a history of mental illness.
Gray said it wasn’t immediately clear what started the altercation. Harold Long was at home with his wife when Vanhook dropped by shortly before the assault took place, Gray said.
Harold long was conscious and able to talk to emergency personnel at the scene, but due to Harold Long’s age and unrelated medical conditions — he was using an oxygen tank when police arrived — Gray said the wounds are probably life-threatening.
