LANCASTER — A Crab Orchard woman was killed and a Stanford woman seriously injured Wednesday in a two-vehicle wreck on Ky. 39 south of Lancaster, officials said.
About 2 p.m., Juanita Duvall, 67, was driving a red Chevrolet Blazer from Crab Orchard toward Lancaster, said Garrard County Coroner Daryl Hodge. The road was slick due to heavy rain and a possible recent fuel spill, said Garrard Sheriff Ronnie Wardrip.
Ivo Scherbing, 22, of Crab Orchard, was driving in a box truck from Lancaster toward Lincoln County and lost control of his vehicle at a curve near Perkins Lane, Hodge said. Scherbing’s truck struck Duvall’s Blazer head-on, killing Duvall on impact, the coroner said.
Duvall’s sister, Ina Bullock, 70, of Stanford, was a passenger in the Blazer and flown to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington with life-threatening injuries. As of this morning, she was in critical condition. Scherbing suffered a possible hand injury and was treated at Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford.
Road conditions contributed to the collision, and no charges will be filed against Scherbing, Wardrip said.
“When I was out there, I could hardly stand up because the road was as slick as glass,” Hodge said. “These three folks were basically in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
State and county law enforcement closed a portion of Ky. 39 for about three hours to respond to the wreck.
