JUNCTION CITY — A man is being investigated by the EPA following an illegal burn Thursday night.
According to Junction City Fire Chief Scott Terry, “Buddy” Coontz applied for a burn permit early Thursday. However, a firefighter went to examine the items at the home on West Scrubbs and denied the request because they were items that could not be burned.
About 9 p.m., Terry and others were returning from helping a couple who had gotten locked out of their home when they saw the items in question on fire.
“He had moved it on the state highway property,” Terry said. Coontz’s property adjoins a right-of-way belonging to the state.
Junction crews put out the fire and Terry said he was required to contact the EPA, and is expected to meet with officials Wednesday. Calls to the EPA in Frankfort were unreturned.
