Motorcycle crash claims the life of a Hustonville woman

CORBIN — A Hustonville woman died Sunday and her husband was hospitalized with serious injuries after a motorcycle crash in Whitley County, officials said.

Vanessa Cheatham, 41, and her husband, James, also 41, were riding a Yamaha motorcycle on Interstate 75 in Corbin around 2 p.m. Sunday, said Whitley County Deputy Coroner Jerry Croley. The motorcycle collided with the rear of a Honda passenger car that was stopped on the highway due to another car accident. The impact threw both Cheathams into the median near exit 25. Passengers from other vehicles tried to help administer first aid as well as CPR to the couple, Croley said.

Paramedics transported Vanessa Cheatham to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, where the county coroner pronounced her dead about 3:10 p.m. Sunday, Croley said. James Cheatham was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment of serious injuries. As of this morning, Cheatham was listed in critical condition in the hospital’s surgical intensive care unit.

Corbin police officers and Kentucky State Police troopers responded to the scene of the accident. Telephone calls to law enforcement officials requesting details about the other driver involved in the accident were not immediately returned.
