On Saturday, the Danville-Boyle County chapter of the NAACP held its first major event since the death of its longtime chapter president Norman Bartleson earlier this month.
Lifetime members James Hunn and Paul Stansbury, along with chapter first vice president Patricia Beasley, organized a “Get Out The Vote” rally which was held Saturday at Smith-Jackson Funeral Home on Bate Street. As the primary organizer, Hunn was especially interested in getting new voters registered. While no unregistered voters came out Saturday, Hunn still felt the event was a success.
“It is critical for everybody to vote, especially in this upcoming election,” Hunn said.
Three candidates for Danville City Commission — Janet Hamner, Paige Stevens and incumbent Ryan Montgomery — attended the rally in case any residents had questions about their platforms.
Stansbury, a former city manager of Danville, noted that he has voted in every election since he was old enough to do so.
“I think everyone has a responsibility to exercise their franchise to vote,” Stansbury said. “This November involves not only the highest form of national government but also the people you see every day on the street.”
Oct. 10 is the last day to register to vote in the upcoming election. A voter registration card is available at each county clerk’s office. For additional information, visit http://elect.ky.gov.
