New extension agent joins staff at Boyle County office
The Boyle County Extension Office recently welcomed a new extension agent to its team.

Alethea Price, 23, a December graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, started as a family and consumer sciences agent on Jan. 18. Price earned a bachelor’s degree in child and family studies with a minor in food service administration and nutrition.

“She’ll definitely be an asset to our staff here,” said Jerry Little, extension agent for agriculture and natural resources. “She is very enthusiastic and energetic.”

Price replaces Natasha Saunders, who left her post to take a job with the University of Kentucky’s Office of Institutional Diversity. Boyle County expects to welcome an additional extension agent in the near future; UK officials are in the process of reviewing applications for a horticulture agent.

Last year, Price completed an internship with the Madison County Extension Office. Her experience helped her decide to pursue a career as an extension agent.

“I really liked everything about the internship,” Price said. “I’m hoping to get some beginners cooking classes started here in Danville. We’ll also have canning classes this summer.”

Price, as a native of Midway and embarking on her first post-collegiate job, was slightly nervous about moving to Danville. But, she says, people inside and outside of the workplace have been extremely friendly and welcoming.

“Danville’s a really great place to live,” Price said. “I’m glad to be here.”

When Price is not working or baking desserts for friends and family members, she enjoys walking her dog in Millennium Park. Her favorite channel is the Food Network, and she says she has it on “all the time” at home.

“I’m looking forward to finding out more about the nutritional needs of the community and helping people use our resources to meet those needs,” Price said.

Price is helping other extension agents plan a March 5 health fair, which will feature presentations on everything from nutrition and beauty to fitness and self-defense. Women from Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln, Marion, Mercer and Washington counties are invited and will receive complimentary gift bags. Participants also may qualify for free or low-cost mammograms, gynecological exams, bone-density exams, and general blood screening including a lipid panel. The event is offered through a partnership with Ephraim McDowell Health. For more information, call (859) 236-4484.
