HARRODSBURG — A Lexington man faces a preliminary hearing next week after Harrodsburg police recovered a gun reported stolen from a Lexington police officer.
Algernon Buster, 22, is charged with receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and trafficking in cocaine. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held in the Boyle County Detention Center under a $57,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday before Mercer District Judge Jeff Dotson.
A juvenile also was charged in the case.
The juvenile was behind the wheel when officers conducted a traffic stop along Park Place on Sept. 12 and smelled marijuana and alcohol in the vehicle. Officers had been watching the car for days as part of an ongoing drug investigation, Lt. Chad Powell said today.
A drug dog from the Danville Police Department was summoned and helped officers discover more than 13 ounces of cocaine and a small amount of marijuana, Powell said.
Also recovered was a 9 mm Glock handgun that had been reported stolen earlier this month from a Lexington police officer. The pistol was a smaller Glock than officers usually carry as their service weapons, Powell said, speculating the gun was the officer’s backup weapon or his personal pistol.
“I talked to a Lexington detective yesterday, and I’m sure they are interested in these two gentleman because of that gun,” Powell said this morning.
Officers also seized two BB guns made to resemble automatic weapons, one an AK47 and the other an M4 assault rifle. Orange markings used to designate the guns as non-lethal had been removed, Powell said, causing officers to “wonder what they might have been using them for.”
