Stanford boy hurt on hayride in serious condition

STANFORD — Two days after a church hayride accident that seriously injured an 8-year-old Stanford boy, local law enforcement has not released any information about the incident.

Jalen Smith was injured Sunday evening during a church hayride at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

According to a WKYT report, the boy suffered a serious leg injury in the accident and was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital. A spokeswoman said this morning that Jalen was listed in serious condition.

“The first call we had received was that a hayride turned over and there were multiple children involved,” Stanford Emergency Medical Services Director Ashley Powell told WKYT. “Upon our crew’s arrival, we realized that it actually didn’t turn over, it had collided with a fence post at a gate.”

Powell believes Jalen became trapped between the wagon and the fence, severely injuring his leg.

When The Advocate-Messenger attempted to reach Powell today, a reporter was told that Powell was at a conference and that no other EMS official was authorized to speak about the accident.

Jalen’s mother, Jacqueline Smith, told WKYT that this is a devastating injury for a little boy who loves to play sports. She said her son is rarely without a uniform or ball.

No information about the accident has been released by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Curt Folger is out of town and unavailable for comment.
