An Ohio man visiting family was struck and killed by a train Saturday in Danville.
Boyle County Coroner Don Hamner said Kevin D. Jackson, 38, of Hamilton, Ohio, had been visiting with family in Danville at a residence in Lannock subdivision when he decided to leave.
“We’re not sure why he left,” Hamner said. “But he called another family member to come pick him up and told her he was on the railroad.”
Hamner said the woman Jackson called was his cousin.
“Before she got there, she saw the rescue squads,” Hamner said. “He had been struck by an incoming train.”
Danville Police Department and Fire Department and Boyle County Emergency Medical Service all responded to the scene.
Police Chief Tony Gray said Jackson may have been trying to get on the train.
“From the initial investigation, it looks like the gentleman was trying to jump on the train and flipped,” Gray said.
The train threw Jackson 70 yards, and officers found his body south of a bridge.
Hamner said he pronounced Jackson dead at the scene at 11:59 p.m.
Both Hamner and Gray said it was believed by family members that Jackson was going to meet other family downtown, and that it’s suspected he had been drinking.
“I believe they (police) talked to some family members and he had consumed some alcohol, but we don’t know that,” Gray said. “We haven’t got any results back to confirm that.”
Hamner said they will have to wait on results of toxicology screens to tell whether Jackson had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“It takes about four to six weeks to get those,” he said.
Officer Kyle Lyons and Detective A.J. Mullins are investigating the accident.
