Jacob Dewayne Ison, 38, is known as “Handyman” Jake Ison on the reality television show about Ernie Brown Jr., better known as “the Turtleman.”
Jail records show Ison was arrested by state police on Jan. 31. He was indicted in Lincoln County in October on one count of flagrant non-support.
As of Monday afternoon, Ison was being held on a $5,000 — 10-percent cash — bond for his Lincoln County charge. A Boyle County jail employee confirmed he also was being held on a $5,000 cash bond for a contempt of court charge stemming from a 2008 civil case.
A Boyle County circuit court clerk employee confirmed the 2008 civil case also concerned child support.
The Lincoln County indictment alleges Ison failed to make child support payments from May 1, 2009, to Sept. 30, 2012.
Jared Albert, a publicist for Animal Planet, released a statement to The Interior Journal declining to comment on Ison’s arrest and noting that “Call of the Wildman” is not currently in production.
The Animal Planet show follows Brown around central Kentucky as he catches a wide variety of animals. Brown and others on the show have become local celebrities since the show began airing.
Ison and other cast members joined Brown at the Lincoln County Fair in August for a “yell-alike” contest, an event that drew hundreds of fans.
In September, Ison was one of many characters from the show who made a special appearance at Pleasant Retreat Plaza shopping center in Lancaster, where they posed for photos with a Junction City boy suffering from a lung disease.
Fans packed out the shopping center’s parking lot during the event, hoping to meet Turtleman. State police had not returned a call asking about Ison’s arrest as of 1 p.m. Monday.
