A Danville girl remained in critical condition today after being hit by a sport-utility vehicle while crossing a street near her home Sunday night.
Police said they were called to Hill-n-Dale Drive near Long Run Community Apartments about 7:30 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Witnesses told police Catherine Gooch, 31, of Danville was southbound on North Hill-n-Dale when Delanie L. Jones, 5, ran from between a parked vehicle into the roadway and was struck by Gooch’s SUV.
Danville Assistant Police Chief Tom Bustle said the girl lives in a nearby apartment with her family. Her father, Daniel Perry, told police he was talking to someone in a car parked across the street from where she was struck when he saw her and told her to go into their apartment. Bustle said Perry told authorities he turned around to continue his conversation when he heard the crash.
Bustle said the investigation showed Gooch had no chance of slowing or avoiding the collision when the girl ran into the road.
The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics with Boyle County Emergency Medical Services before being airlifted to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. Bustle said she suffered head, spine and pelvic injuries.
