Local Red Cross seeks aid for Japanese
The American Red Cross is soliciting funds to aid victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Japanese officials have characterized the disaster as the worse crisis to face the nation since World War II.
Contributions less than $5,000 may be mailed to American Red Cross, Box 31243, Washington, D.C. 20013-7243 or made online by going to www.Redcross.org and indicating the contribution is for Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Those wishing to contribute more than $5,000 should contact the local chapter at (859) 236-6538 for guidance.
Ruthann Phillips, executive director of the central Kentucky chapter, notes that when there has been a disaster of major proportions locally or nationally, local Japanese companies have responded generously.
For example, Trim Masters alone contributed more than $35,000 to aid victims of the Katrina disaster. Now that the Japanese homeland has been impacted similarly, it is an opportunity for the local community to respond to the needs of disaster victims in Japan, Phillips said.
Local residents concerned about American citizens living or traveling in Japan who have not yet been heard from should contact the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Services at 1-888-407-4747.
