Ten students representing four schools in Danville and Boyle County are busy planning a “Step Up for Kids” rally to be held in conjunction with the Oct. 11 vice-presidential debate at Centre College.
The students, who represent Danville High School, Boyle County High School, Kentucky School for the Deaf and Danville Christian Academy, had their second planning committee meeting with local educators as well as United Way officials on Monday.
“There is a lot of work to do before the debate, so the committee will meet at least once or twice a week to get this rally ready to go,” said Ann Goodwin, a Danville native and community impact director for the United Way.
Goodwin said as a native of Danville it is exciting to see how engaged the 10 student members are in the planning process.
“I’m honored that I was selected from DCA to be a part of this group,” said Daniel Crall, 16, a Danville Christian Academy junior. “I’ve been following the election news reports much more closely now.”
Full details have not been arranged for the youth rally, but it will be held Oct. 10 and probably last about an hour, said Shari Stewart, a language arts teacher at Danville High who is advising the students involved with the debate.
The youth will urge vice-presidential candidates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan to make the country’s children a priority when making decisions over the next four years.
Calvin Steber, 17, a Danville High senior, said he looks forward to being a part of the rally and debate festivities.
“I want people to see that youth have real and legitimate concerns about our future,” Steber said. “My biggest concern is young people having a fair shot at economic opportunities such as college because of where the economy is.”
Dakota Jarman, 17, a Boyle County High senior, believes the rally and the debate will bring the community together.
“Being on the planning committee has been a great experience for all of us students,” Jarman said. “I feel privileged to be a part of this process.”
