WAYNESBURG — A Somerset man died in a one-vehicle wreck along a sharp curve in Ky. 1781 shortly after midnight Sunday, barely a year after another fatal wreck in almost exactly the same spot.
Clarence Baugh, 27, was traveling alone at about 12:20 a.m. when his vehicle traveled off the edge of the road, flipped multiple times and landed in a creek, state police said.
Baugh was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol use is believed to be a factor in the wreck.
Lincoln County Coroner Farris Marcum said Baugh was traveling at a high rate of speed along Ky. 1781 and passing multiple other vehicles on the road.
Drivers who had been passed by Baugh witnessed the wreck and called 911, Marcum said.
"He supposedly passed a car to two, rounded the curve, lost control, clipped a fence post, then clipped a tree, and then came to rest in the creek," he said.
Marcum pronounced Baugh dead at the scene at 1:15 a.m.
Marcum said the tree Baugh's vehicle clipped is next to a tree bearing flowers and a cross from a fatal wreck that happened in December 2011.
Speed and alcohol were factors in both fatal crashes, he added.
According to The Interior Journal's archives, Stanford resident George L. Hampton, 44, was killed Dec. 27, 2011, when his vehicle struck a tree along the curve in Ky. 1781. Like Baugh, Hampton was not wearing a seatbelt.
