Five people were inducted into the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame at this year’s KCA Convention and Trade Show January 10-12 in Lexington. Boyle County’s Jere Caldwell was among the inductees. He was nominated by Dr. Darrell Johnson, Boyle County Cattlemen’s Association president.
Caldwell entered business with his father in the late 1950s; together, they backgrounded steers, bred and raised hogs, raised tobacco and grew corn and hay. In 1960, he transitioned from backgrounding to a cow-calf operation. This developed his interest for genetic improvement and led him to focus his efforts on Hereford cattle which eventually earned him the Polled Hereford Association’s Lifetime Breeder award.
As a member of the KCA since its inception in 1973, Caldwell served as the first president from 1972-1973. He also has served on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Board and was the founding member and first president of the Boyle County Cattlemen’s Association.
“Jere’s unique efforts to participate, obtain and share all possible improvements with the agriculture industry to improve Kentucky’s agricultural economy make him someone we can all be thankful for,” said Johnson.
KCA represents the state’s livestock industry on legislative, regulatory and industry issues at both the state and federal levels. The Hall of Fame is designed to honor a member who has given time, service and talent to the betterment of the association at the county and/or state levels.
Other inductees included Martin Hayden, James Henry “J.H.” Manion, Dr. Jack Kimbrough and Charles Miller.
