Students in the Boyle County school system will see a slightly later start date on the 2013-2014 school calendar, with opening day Aug. 19 and the students’ first day Aug. 20.

The later beginning is due in large part to the middle school renovation, which is expected to be complete by Aug. 14.

Fall break will be Oct. 7-11; winter break, Dec. 23-31; and spring break March 31-April 4. Students will be off Sept. 2 for Labor Day; Nov. 27-29 for Thanksgiving; and Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The schedule also builds in eight days before school opens for staff development and professional development days for teachers. An additional staff development day is scheduled for March 21.

This equals a total of 173 instructional days for students. On two of those days, called Spotlight Days, students at various schools will be able to showcase some of what they have learned. For Boyle County High and Middle schools, the spotlight day will be Nov. 12, and for the elementary schools, it will be Nov. 19.

According to Assistant Superintendent David Young, the students can do performances in the arts, drama and music, or can show project-based learning activities using technology.

Closing day for students will be May 23, with staff closing May 26.
