Danville students will begin classes in August at about the same time as last year, after the Danville Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2013-2014 school year Monday night.
Aug. 14 will be the day students are to return to school and May 21, 2014, is the anticipated last day of classes, with the teachers having professional development and planning days Aug. 6-13, and completing their school year on May 22, 2014.
This will offer 171 instructional days during the year. Six planning days are included in the calendar, with two starting before the school year. They are staff-only days that occur on Sept. 27, Nov. 1, Feb. 17 and March 14.
There are also four professional development days, three of which are incorporated before students return. The fourth is scheduled for May 20, Election Day, and is a day off for students.
Labor Day is the first holiday, on Sept. 2. Fall break will occur Oct. 7-11, and spring break will take place March 31-April 4. Danville students will be off Nov. 27-29 for Thanksgiving and will get two full weeks for winter break, Dec. 23-Jan. 3, returning to classes on Jan. 7. Students also will be off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20.
