Heritage Hospice Inc. Veterans Committee is planning its fifth annual Veterans Appreciation Day and looks forward to the community’s continued support.
This year, Veterans Day falls on a Sunday so the event will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, at the Danville National Guard Armory.
All veterans in Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer counties are invited to come and bring one guest.
The event has grown every year. In 2011, the event had 1,286 veterans register, including 68 veterans who had never attended.
Members of Masonic lodges Franklin No. 28 F&AM, Lancaster No. 104 and Mercer No. 777 cook fish for the meal. This year they are adding barbecue to the menu.
Indian Hill Christian Church provides desserts. Atudents at Danville Christian Academy serve food with the assistance of community leaders.
Members of the planning committee make sure parking is not a problem. After parking near Admiral Stadium, veterans are given a ride on golf carts and taken to the armory’s entrance.
Door prizes are given to the veterans and donations are needed. Popular door prizes are gift cards to restaurants, Kroger or Walmart, flashlights, mini-coolers, car items, patriotic hats, or items and services from local businesses, such as car washes or haircuts.
Anyone who would like to donate door prizes or financially support this tax-deductible event in 2012 can mail items to: Attn: Veterans Appreciation Day Event, Heritage Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 1213, Danville, Ky. 40423; bring them to the office at 120 Enterprise Drive in Danville; or call the hospice office at (859) 236-2425.
