Library hosts blood drive

Central Kentucky Blood Center is at the Danville-Boyle County Public Library, noon-4:30 p.m. today in the Heart of Danville Community Room. Through Sept. 14, all donors will be eligible to win a 2012 Toyota RAV 4.

Humane Society promotes fundraiser
 
Visit the Danville Applebee’s Restaurant, 300 Skywatch Drive, from Friday to Sunday for a “Dine to Donate” benefit for Central Kentucky Regional Humane Society. Clip out the ad from the Wednesday edition of The Advocate-Messenger, stop by the shelter at 214 Richmond Street or email ckyrhs@ckyrhs.org to receive a coupon to present to your server with your bill, and CKYRHS will receive 10 percent of your tab.

Family reunion planned

The annual Adams-Sowder family reunion will begin at noon Saturday at the William Whitley House. A potluck meal will be served at noon. For more information, call (606) 355-7136.

Wellness Center offers women’s camp

 McDowell Wellness Center is offering a women’s only boot camp specifically designed to help overweight women get in shape while losing weight.
The camp will be 7:30-8:30 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for six weeks beginning Aug. 14. An orientation will be 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13.
Campers will participate in a variety of classes such as weights and conditioning, kickboxing, pool workouts, nutrition and outdoor running and walking sessions. Each participant will have a one-on-one session with a registered dietician at McDowell Wellness Center. All campers will weigh in weekly and keep a food journal.
At the end of the camp, a grand prize consisting of a one month McDowell Wellness Center membership, three 30-minute personal training sessions, one counseling session with a registered dietician and a 30-minute massage will be given to the participant who loses the largest percentage of body weight.
The cost is $100 for wellness center members and $125 for non-members. Class size is limited, so advance sign-up is recommended.

Woodlawn hosts picnic, orientation

Woodlawn Elementary School will have registration noon-6 p.m. Thursday in the school media center. To register returning students, proof of residency is required (two summer utility bills). New students will need proof of residence, Kentucky immunization form, state issued birth certificate and Social Security card.
A new parent orientation is offered 5 p.m. Aug. 9 in Woodlawn’s Media Center. New parents can learn the ins and outs of Woodlawn Elementary, including how the car circle works, the importance of the home-school notebook, and other useful information.
Woodlawn will have its annual PTO Back–to-School Picnic at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 9. Students can meet their teachers and enjoy hotdogs, chips and drinks with their classmates and teacher.
