This week’s activities at the Garrard County Public Library include:
Prime Time Family Reading Time — This family reading program, sponsored by the Kentucky Humanities council and the Garrard County Family Resource Center, is a great way to spend time with your kids (ages 6-10) and help them appreciate good books and will be held 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. This program is for children ages 6-10 with a parent or guardian.This program is also sponsored by Farmers Bank, First Southern National Bank, Whitaker Bank, Cundiff Chiropractic, Intercounty Energy, Mod-Continent University, town & County Shoes and Joe and Connie Brown. A family meal and activities for 3-5-year-olds will be provided. Call (859) 792-3424 to register.
Story Hour — 9:15-9:45 a.m. Wednesday, All My Children for ages 2-3; 10-10:30 a.m., Primarily Preschool for children ages 4-5; 11-11:30 a.m. The Young and the Restless for ages 18 months to 3 years.
Family movie matinee — 4 p.m. on Thursday. Papi is back and he’s ready to party! Join Papi and his two- and four-legged family as they move into a posh Beverly Hills hotel, complete with a luxurious doggy spa. But there’s trouble in puppy paradise when Rose, the littlest member of the pack, feels smaller and less special then ever. Now it’s up to Papi to help Rosa find and celebrate, her inner strength, which turns out to be bigger than she ever dreamed. Overflowing with laughter, love and excitement, this is tail-wagging fun for the while family. Rated PG.
Email basics class — 1 p.m. on Friday. Learn how to set up an email account, send messages and other basic email skills at this free class. space is limited so come early to reserve your spot.
Ephraim McDowell Health sponsoring free stroke risk screenings
Ephraim McDowell Health is sponsoring a series of free stroke risk screenings beginning Sept. 19. The screenings will be offered at the following locations:
- 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Boyle County Health Department, (859) 236-2053
- 8 a.m.-noon Sept. 29 at the Boyle County Extension Office, (859) 236-4484
- 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Lincoln County Health Department, (606) 365-3106
- 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Mercer County Health Department, (859) 734-4522
- 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Garrard County Health Department, (859) 792-2153
Health screenings offered include cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index and stroke risk score card. After the screenings are complete, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their results and follow-up educational options with a licensed health professional.
Participants should not eat 12 hours prior to their screening if they would like to have the blood test that gives them a full lipid panel. This gives the participant detailed information that includes their HDL, LDL, triglycerides and glucose.
The screenings are open to the public for anyone 18 years of age and older. Call one of the locations listed above for an appointment, or walk-ins are welcome.
