Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Joel Pett will visit Centre College Monday through Wednesday as a Humana Visiting Scholar, participating in events that include a convocation address at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Weisiger Theater. The address is free and open to the public.
In his address, “Drawing the Line: Cartooning an Absurd Political Universe,” Pett will discuss contemporary politics and other subjects, including the upcoming vice-presidential debate Oct. 11 at Centre.
Pett will visit with students, faculty, staff and the community from 4-5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Grissom Reading Room of the Grace Doherty Library. All are welcome to attend. He will also speak to several classes and talk to student groups on campus while at Centre.
Pett has been the staff cartoonist for the Lexington-Herald Leader since 1984. He regularly contributes to USA Today and the Los Angeles Times, and his work has been featured in such publications as the Boston Globe, the New York Times, Newsweek, Time magazine and the Washington Post, among numerous others.
Along with winning a Pulitzer Prize in 2000, Pett has been a finalist for the award in 1989, 1998 and 2011. His many other awards include a 1999 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, four Global Media Awards and a regional Emmy for his television commentary. Pett has given three international seminars for the U.S. State Department about editorial cartoons.
The Humana Visiting Scholar program was funded through a gift to Centre from the Humana Foundation, a philanthropic branch of health-care corporation Humana Inc., based in Louisville.
