More than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. For many of those individuals, the disease is accompanied by expensive and painful medical treatments and seemingly endless doctor’s visits.

“It’s estimated that 30 to 40 percent of the new drugs that are in the process of being developed and tested are going to be oral drugs,” said Amber Ashford, a medical social worker for Commonwealth Cancer Center in Danville. The reason for the shift in medications is the ability of those oral drugs to be “targeted” to a specific cell or area, which is much more beneficial for patients.
