PERRYVILLE — Mary Stare Whitehouse, age 96 of Danville, Ky., died Friday, Oct. 19, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hudson Whitehouse; and two brothers, Robert Stare of Mendota, Ill., and Charles Stare of Denver, Colo.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Johnson (Bill) of Jaffrey, N.H.,  and Shirley Foley (Darwin) of Shelbyville, Ky.; a son, Charles T. Whitehouse (Barbara Joosse) of Cedarburg, Wis.; two grandchildren, Sara Foley of New York, N.Y., and Becky Foley (Simon Fink) of St. Joseph, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Lucia and Esme Almeida, both of Chicago, Marina Lisberg of Milwaukee and Julius Foleyfink of St. Joseph; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Stare of Denver, Colo. 

She was a resident of McDowell Place in Danville and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and raised by her grandmother in Mendota, Ill. She graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., with a degree in chemistry and got her master’s as a dietitian at the University of Iowa at Iowa City. After marriage and living in Denver, Colo., Huntsville, Ala., and Silver Spring, Md., the Whitehouses moved to Boyle County where she taught at Kentucky School for the Deaf. She loved to garden with her specialties being strawberries, iris and day lilies. She also loved to meet with her Homemaker’s Club and her quilting group, making many quilts, including county and state fair winning entries. 

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Danville, Ky. 

Donations in her honor can be made to the Forkland Community Center or Centenary United Methodist Church.
