NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Roberta Atkins Bailey, 97, died on Dec. 9, 2012.

She was preceded by her husband of 65 Years, J.H. Bailey Jr.

Roberta (“Buddie” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren) and John Hill, former long-time residents of Danville, Ky., had lived at Richland Place in Nashville, Tenn., since 1995.

Survivors include her daughter, Frances Graves (William) of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, John Hill Bailey III (Sallie) of Nashville; four grandchildren, Martha Graves Marriott (Anthony), William M. Graves Jr. (Jen), Shelby Bailey Wheliss and Frances Bailey Linley (David); a sister, Lida Lee Hoskins, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Roberta was a lifetime member of The Presbyterian Church in Danville and, most recently, of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville. She was, first and foremost, a devoted and loving wife and mother as well as a dear friend to all who knew her. Roberta was a homemaker who took pride in welcoming everyone, friends, family and acquaintances, into her cozy home with a gracious spirit that included special treats cooked in her kitchen. Her table often was graced by roses grown in her own garden.

As a former teacher of home economics at Centre College, she employed her considerable skills as a seamstress doing embroidery, sewing clothes and, later in life, quilting beautiful works of art that she gave to her children and grandchildren. To know Roberta was to know the true meaning of love and hospitality.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Danville, KY 40422, or to the charity of your choice.

Visitation with the family will be 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday in the Parlor at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3900 West End Avenue, Nashville, Tenn. A memorial service of witness to the resurrection will follow.

Arrangements are by Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home, 201 25th Ave., North, Nashville, TN 37203.
