STANFORD — Samuel Duvall “Rambo” Bastin, 74, of Stanford, died Thursday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. 

Born Sept. 4, 1937, in Stanford, he was a son of the late Holly Ray and Ethel Robinson Bastin. He was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church and retired from the U.S. Armyin 1975, after two tours in Vietnam and proudly serving his country for 21 years. He received two bronze stars and the Army Commendation medal. He was a past commander and lifetime member of the John Logan American Legion Post 345 Stanford, VFW Post 3634 in Danville and he was a Kentucky Colonel. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out at Dairy Queen having coffee with his friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Danny) Baker of Lancaster and Karen (Kim) Sowders of Stanford; two sons, Samuel D. (Shannon) Bastin II of Danville and Ray Bastin of Sacramento, Calif., and their mother Pauline Goode Hopkins; two stepdaughters, Anita (Richard) Floyd of Waynesburg and Nancy (Jeff) Baker of Stanford, and their mother Joyce Miracle Durham Bastin of Stanford; five grandchildren, Christopher Sowders and Kristyn Bastin of Danville, Leslie and Molly Baker of Lancaster, and Daniel Bastin of Lexington; two stepgrandchildren, Rachael Floyd of Waynesburg and Zach Baker of Stanford; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Maishaun Baker of Lancaster; two sisters, Dean Anding of Bay Springs, Miss., and Ann Endress of Oxford, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Dale, William, John and Truman Bastin; and three sisters, Ray Jean McClure Weaver, Mary Phillips and Bessie Allen.

Services are 4 p.m. today at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford with the Rev. Johnny Adamson officiating. 

Visitation is 1-4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
