STANFORD — James F. Smith, 86, of New Salem, Ky., died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford, Ky.  

Born May 3, 1926, in New Salem, he was a son of the late James Elmer and Julia B. Estes Smith. Mr. Smith was a Navy veteran having served in World War II. He was a farmer, a carpenter and a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty R. Smith; five children, Jimmy Smith, Bill Smith, Julia (Jeff) Hogue, Patricia (Ronnie) Walls and Jennifer (Brian) Walls; a brother, Herschel (Sue) Smith; two sisters, Sheila (Sonny) Cason and Nyletta¿(J.W.)  Walls; six grandchildren, Natasha Grider, Darrell Walls, Emily Weddle, Daniel Walls, Katlyn Hogue and Mary Beth Hogue; and a great-grandson, Ashton Grider. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Smith; three sisters, Louise Smith, Margaret Hogue and Patsy Coleman; and a granddaughter, Beth Ann Walls.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012, at New Salem Baptist Church.  

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012, at the church with the Rev. Austin Campbell officiating. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Jimmy Smith, Bill Smith, Darrell Walls, Daniel Walls, Danny Coffman and Wes Hogue. Honorary bearers will be Earl Dean McWhorter, Billie Dean McWhorter, Dr. Rod Bates, Diana Gosser, Nyletta Walls and Frankie Rex.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the New Salem Cemetery Fund.
