STANFORD — John Lowry Jr., 77, of Halls Gap, Ky., went to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 8, 2012.
Born July 3, 1934, in Fayette County, Ky., he was a son of the late John Sr. and Isabell Cassidy Lowry. A graduate of Lafayette High School in Lexington, Ky., he attended classes at Lexington Christian College. He farmed for several years and worked at IBM in Lexington. He was a charter member of Southland Christian Church in Lexington and served as a deacon, elder and teacher. He served as a minister at McKinney Christian Church, McKinney, Ky.; and served on the board and taught at Southern Acres Christian Church, Lexington. He returned to ministry at Mackville Christian Church, Mackville, Ky., Mount Moriah Christian Church, Stanford, Ky.; North Madison Christian Church, Madison, Ind., and Crab Orchard Christian Church, Crab Orchard, Ky., retiring after 41 years of leadership and ministry. During this time, he sang with both the Messengers Quartet and Gospel Messengers Trio.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sue Perry Lowry; two children, Patricia Waldroup (Rod) of Stanford, Ky., and Robert Lowry (Sherry) of Louisville, Ky.; two granddaughters, Heather DeMarcus (Eddy) and Michelle Mindel (Thomas); two grandsons, Ryan Waldroup (Amanda) and Trent Lowry; one great-granddaughter, Harper DeMarcus; two brothers, Alonzo and Alvin Lowry; a sister, Nora Feeback; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jewel Lowry Davies.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford. Bro. Rick Lowry will officiate the service. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Christian Church Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Ryan Waldroup, Trent Lowry, Eddy DeMarcus, Thomas Mindel, David Lowry and Sam Gay.
Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Spurlin Funeral Home.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to Heritage Hospice.
