On Dec. 14, 2012, pure evil visited Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. When news broke about the massacre that claimed the lives of 20 innocent children, I broke down. I wept long and hard until I had no more tears left.
I have a big heart and a love for little children. This horrific event should never have happened. But it did. And things of this nature happen all too often in this country. I have asked this before. I ask it again now. What kind of nation have we become? What kind of people are we?
We are a violent people. Violence is a deep rooted sickness that is vested in pure evil and we are becoming sicker with each passing day. Who among us can be proud to live in a society that slaughters little children? I cannot.
Just as our government is broken, so too is our society. Many excuses will come forth as to why this horrible tragedy happened. But none will be acceptable. Much talk will be made about change, but little will occur. Can a society control evil?
There will be much debate about gun control, but only a constitutional fight will ensue. There will be much debate about mental illness. But it will come to naught, and senseless acts of violence will continue.
I'm not sure there is an answer. But our society and our government must seek answers. Our nation is disintegrating from within and must take strong and serious measures, no matter how painful, to halt our disintegration.
My heart is broken over what happened at Sandy Hook. It will forever be broken. There is no understanding this tragic event. Evil does indeed lurk in the hearts of men. Evil is a common presence among us. How do we deal with it? I do not know. The mass murder of little children is past all understanding and comprehension. May God have mercy upon this evil and godless nation.
