The nuts and bolts of the metered paywall that takes effect Dec. 3, 2012.
1. Paywall goes into effect Dec. 3, 2012.
2. The websites’ home pages and section fronts will continue to be free.
3. Everyone will continue to be able to read a certain number of local stories for free (5 at weeklies, 10 at dailies).
4. Only locally produced stories will count against the free allotment.
5. Readers will get a welcome message the first time they go to the site explaining the paywall and a warning message when they are getting close to their free limit.
6. Print subscribers will all initially have access to the site for free, but will have to pay a highly reduced rate ($1/month at dailies, $5/year at weeklies) once they are up for renewal.
7. Print subscribers will be billed the extra charge upon renewal but will have the option of declining the charge if they do not wish electronic access.
8. Online users who are not print subscribers can purchase online-only subscriptions through either the circulation department, the new online circulation portal, or through press+(our paywall provider).
9. The online-only rates for The Interior Journal and The Jessamine Journal are $18.75/year; the online-only rate for The Winchester Sun is $7.49/month; the online-only rate for amnews.com is $9.99/month. Both The Winchester Sun and amnews.com offer a $79/year option as well.
10. Electronic (online) subscribers will also have unlimited access to the E-editions, the digital replica of the printed paper.
11. The current mobile apps for The Advocate Messenger and The Winchester Sun contain only a small portion of the local content of the local content on the core websites and are not included with the paywall. All access to those apps will remain free.
12. There will soon be opportunities to read the E-editions through mobile applications. These will require subscriptions.
