After winning two NCAA tournament games at home, the Centre College women are taking their act on the road.
The Colonels, who are in the round of 16 for the first time since 2001, will be off to Alliance, Ohio, for a third-round game in the NCAA Division III women’s tourney Friday against Carthage.
Centre (26-3) is part of a four-team sectional at Mount Union from which one team will advance to the Final Four. The Colonels will play Carthage (22-7) at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a game between Illinois Wesleyan (24-5) and Mount Union (28-1). Friday’s winners will meet at 7 p.m. Saturday for a spot in the Final Four March 16-17 at Holland, Mich.
The Colonels advanced to the round of 16 for the first time since 2001 — which was also when they last appeared in the NCAA — by beating Guilford and Washington (Mo.) last weekend at Alumni Gymnasium.
Carthage, located in Kenosha, Wis., lost a one-point game to Illinois Wesleyan in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament final after finishing third in the league in the regular season.
The Lady Reds defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater 74-68 and DePauw 53-48 in their first- and second-round games last weekend in Greencastle, Ind. They have reached the third round for the second time in three years.
