Centre Basketball: Centre men and women earn close road wins over Sewanee in SAA openers
The Centre College men’s and women’s basketball teams opened conference play Saturday with a pair of wins at Sewanee, Tenn.
The men pulled out a 50-48 win over Sewanee, while the women won 41-41 in the Southern Athletic Association opener for both.
Men
Centre 50, Sewanee 48 — The Colonels led by 10 points with 10 1/2 minutes to play, then hung on to edge Sewanee.
Tyler Wesley’s jumper with 3 minutes to go put Centre (4-2, 1-0 SAA) up 50-45, but Sewanee’s Brett Bouldin nailed a 3-pointer with 1:43 remaining to cut it 50-48. However, neither team could muster a point from there.
“This was a grind-it-out game, obviously,” said Centre coach Greg Mason, whose team never trailed. “It was just a very pleasing win for our guys. We’re going through a lot right now with injuries and sickness and going into finals. And to beat an unbeaten Sewanee on their home floor shows a lot about their heart and feistiness.
“The last 5 minutes we really played well. Hopefully at some point we’ll be a little more offensively efficient.”
Wesley finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, Josh Karsner had 11 points and Blake Scinta added 10 points for Centre. Bryon Ellis had eight points, but Mason said Ellis’ defense was the biggest key.
“Bryon defensed their best shooter (Nilan Hodge) and limited him to just two 3-point attempts and no points. He was so sound defensively, that’s probably the key thing that won the game for us.”
Centre led 13-4 on Karsner’s 3-pointer with 11:18 left in the first half, and Karsner’s jumper gave the Colonels a 26-21 halftime lead. Centre held its largest lead at 44-34 on Wesley’s jumper with 10:29 to go before Sewanee (3-1, 0-1) made it a game.
Centre finished 20 of 48 (41.7 percent) from the field, hit four of 15 3-pointers and went 6 of 7 at the line. Sewanee was 20 of 49 shooting, and Centre held a 31-27 rebounding edge.
Women
Centre 42, Sewanee 41 — Maggie Hartlage’s basket in the final minute lifted the Colonels over the Tigers.
There were two ties and six lead changes in the second half before Hartlage buried a jumper with 31 seconds to play. Centre (2-5, 1-0) then forced a turnover on Sewanee’s next possession to seal the win.
“I’m just proud of the girls, they showed a lot of grittiness and toughness. We had a brutal non-conference start, and hopefully that helped us find a way to win,” Centre coach Wendie Austin-Robinson said.
Chelsea Benham scored 12 points with nine rebounds to lead Centre, while Paige Baechle had 10 points.
Centre opened the game on a 10-0 run, but Sewanee used an 8-0 run to close the gap to 20-19 at the half.
“We got off to a nice lead, but we did not maintain it through the first half,” Austin-Robinson said. “But the girls did a good job in the second half finding a way to win.”
Sewanee (2-2, 0-1) got the first bucket of the second half to take a 21-20 lead, and the Tigers eventually led by five points three different times. Baechle’s jumper put centre up 39-38 with 4:41 to play. Sewanee went back up 41-40 with 1;25 to go before Hartlage answered with the eventual game-winner. Centre was 16 of 43 (37 percent) shooting and Sewanee was 15 of 45 from the floor. Centre held a 34-23 rebounding advantage, but had 19 turnovers to Sewanee’s 15.
