The Centre College women shot 58 percent from the field Thursday night, but that wasn’t enough as the Colonels lost 77-72 to Asbury at Wilmore.
Asbury took the lead less than 8 minutes into the game and never relinquished it, keeping the margin between two and nine points for the rest of the night to end the Colonels’ two-game winning streak.
Centre (3-6) trailed by eight points with 3:48 to play but pulled to within two points four times in the final 1:21.
Alanna Guy’s jump shot with 13 seconds left made it 74-72, but the Colonels’ couldn’t score again, and Asbury (11-4) closed out the win by going 6 for 6 at the free-throw line in the final 19 seconds.
Paige Baechle led Centre with 29 points and 14 rebounds two days after she posted 27 points and 15 rebounds in a win at Spalding.
The rest of the Colonels had only 10 rebounds, however, and they were outrebounded 31-24. They also had 17 turnovers, while Asbury had 11.
Chelsea Benham added 11 points for Centre, which led 12-6 less than 5 minutes into the game but lost the lead just over 3 minutes later.
The Colonels went 16 for 24 from the field in the first half but still trailed 46-40 at halftime. The Eagles were 19 for 38 in the first half and finished at 45 percent.
Dorian Downs led Asbury with 19 points.
