Centre Football: Haden leads Colonels to 42-21 season-opening win over Bethany
Heath Haden threw for two scores and ran for another in his first start Saturday as Centre College doubled up host Bethany 42-21 in the Colonels’ season opener in Bethany, W.¿Va.
Haden accounted for 331 yards of offense, rushing 19 times for 151 yards and going 10 of 18 passing for 180 with no interceptions  for the Colonels, who rolled up 452 yards of offense.
“That was good for us. We needed him as a quarterback to show that confidence we need to see in him,”¿Centre coach Andy Frye said. “So I’m thrilled for him, but I’m also thrilled for our team because as a quarterback, you want to make sure, “OK, can this guy lead us to victory?’ He did a nice job.”
Monte Scotton had 84 of Centre 272 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns of his own, Rob Melillo hauled in five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown and Jason Osterman also had a touchdown catch.
“Our offensive line played real well. The thing I was thrilled about was we wore them down. Our conditioning was the reason, and that was evident in the second half,”¿Frye said. “By the end of the first half, when we were able to score late, then come out in the third and score on our first drive, that was indicative of our offseason conditioning program.”
Bethany got on the board first on a 13-yard scoring run by Phil Acrie, but the Colonels answered on their first possession.
Haden hit Osterman for two passes, the delivered a 49-yard scoring strike to Melillo. Jordan Gay’s point after made it 7-7 with 8:24 left in the first quarter.
Centre struck again early in the second quarter.
Haden threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Osterman on a third-and-8 to cap a six play, 70-yard drive and the Colonels led 14-7 with 11:45 to go in the first half.
Matt Grimard threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Eric Blinn with 40 seconds to go to tie the score, but that was more than enough time for one final score for the Colonels before halftime.
Starting at the Centre 34, Haden had runs of 8 and 14 yards, then hit Melillo for a 40-yard gain to the Bethany 4-yard line. A penalty on Bethany moved the ball to the 2, and Haden went in two plays later to give the Colonels the lead for good at 21-14.
Scotton then got going in the third quarter.
A 51-yard run by Haden gave centre a first down at the Bison’s 3-yard line. On third down, Scotton went in from a yard out for a 28-14 Centre lead with 11:23 left in the third.
He tacked on another score later in the quarter.
Michael Del Prince’s 21-yard punt return set Centre up deep in Bethany territory.
Eight plays later, Scotton went in from 2 yards out to give the Colonels a 35-14 lead with 3:21 left in the third.
Bethany trimmed the lead to 35-21 on Marcus D’Agular Alexander’s 19-yard scoring pass from Grimard early in the fourth quarter, but Centre answered with its own 55-yard scoring drive to seal the win.
Scotton ran for 26 yards and had a 7-yard catch on the 11 play drive, the last 5 rushing yards giving him his third touchdown of the game and putting Centre ahead 42-21 with 3:10 to go.
The Centre defense held Bethany to 248 total yards. Thomas Kent and Andrew Spitznagel led Centre with seven tackles each, and Grant Poston had 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss.
