Centre Football: Meisner's 4th quarter touchdown lifts Colonels over Sewanee 10-7
Harry Meisner scored on a 13-yard run with 12 minutes, 55 seconds left to play Saturday as the Centre College football team rallied for a 10-7 win at Sewanee for its first Southern Athletic Association win.
“Their M.O. is you don't get very many possessions … so you've got to score when you've got a chance to,”¿Centre coach Andy Frye said of Sewanee. “I thought in the fourth quarter our kids turned the corner and we ended up playing well enough to put it away. We finally started putting it together.”
The Colonels (4-2, 1-1 SAA) trailed 7-3 when they got the ball at their own 33 late in the third quarter.
Heath Haden went 5-for-5 passing on the drive for 64 yards, and Meisner took a handoff on first down and raced 13 yards for the score and his third rushing touchdown of the season to make it 10-7 with just under 13 minutes to play.
Haden was 12 of 24 passing for 154 yards and threw his first interception of the season. Matt Farrell ran for 38 yards and Meisner 32 as Centre outgained Sewanee (2-4, 0-1) 240-215.
“The defense played very well, the fact that we kept Sewanee to seven points, and they'd been averaging in the 20s. We gave up one drive, and then we were able to stall them on a couple others,”¿Frye said. “Our kids got them in situations where we were able to get them third-and-long.
“Any time you play against the veer, when you do win, I don't think they're ever pretty. It's a fight for four quarters with the way their offense is designed.”
Frye also praised Sewanee’s defense.
“They put a lot pressure on,”¿he said. “They were bringing blitzes from everywhere, and it put Heath in a tough position where we had to make plays, and sometimes we didn't.
Jase Brooks got the Tigers on the board first, scoring on a 3-yard run with 8:11 left in the first half.
On Centre’s next drive, Haden was intercepted for the first time, but the Centre defense got the ball back when Austin Jones forced a fumble by Sewanee’s Curtis Johnson and Brooks Holton recovered at the Sewanee 34. Five plays later, Jordan Gay, who missed from 49 yards earlier and later missed a 41-yard field goal, made one from 42 yards out to make it 7-3 at the half.
It stayed that way until the fourth quarter.
Centre decided to punt on a 4th-and-2 at the Sewanee 45. but Haden’s punt was downed at the 11.
“I knew right then with 4 minutes we were able to keep it in position where able hold them right there, and that was the difference in the game, I thought,”¿Frye said.
The teams continued to trade punts, but Centre got the ball back after Charlie Powell was stopped for a loss on 9 yards on fourth down at the Sewanee 20 with 1:33 to play. The Colonels drove down to the 1 yard line, but took a knee as time expired to pick up the win.
