Centre Sports: Baseball team takes two from Hanover; women's lacrosse team wins

The Centre College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Hanover on Saturday, winning the two seven-inning games 2-1 and 11-6.

Sean Cole’s one-out fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh inning brought in Jordan Burgess with the winning run in game one.

Host Centre (7-4) had only three hits, none of them in the decisive seventh inning. Aaron Ammann had two hits for the Colonels.

The Colonels tied the game at 1-all in the sixth inning when Ammann doubled and scored when Kyle Cook grounded into a double play.

Winning pitcher Kyle Neu allowed nine hits and two walks in seven innings, but Hanover (5-5) couldn’t score again after getting a run in the first inning.

The Colonels won the second game on the strength of an eight-run first inning that included a three-run triple by Forrest Goodwin, who was 2 for 3 with four RBIs.

Jake Johnson and Trey Litsey also had two hits each, and one of Johnson’s was a home run.

It was the Colonels’ third weekend win, following a 5-2 victory over Wabash (2-4) on Friday in which Cole, Goodwin and Phil Brilli had two hits each and winning pitcher Joe Nash allowed one run with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

Women’s Lacrosse

At Danville, Jacqueline Anderson, Sarah Mastey and Audrey Powers scored three goals each to lead Centre (3-2, 2-1 Southern Athletic Association) to a 14-5 win over Birmingham-Southern (2-4, 0-3).

Katy Cremer and Meg Hawthorne had two goals each, and goalkeeper Allison Eisner had two saves.

Softball

At Danville, Centre (1-3, 0-2 SAA) lost both ends of a doubleheader to Hendrix (6-2, 2-0), falling 4-2 and 5-1.

Ashley Christian had three hits in the two games, and Tori Silcox, Christina Schwarz and Chelsea Collard had two each.
