Prep Baseball: Boyle coaching job attracts 'a lot of interest'
Boyle County has taken steps toward hiring a new baseball coach, but the final steps are still at least a week or two away.
Boyle principal Will Begley said there has been “a lot of interest” in the job, but he said the school will wait to see whether any teaching openings become available in the next few days before making any further moves.
Begley said there were “12 to 15 applicants”¿for the job that was vacated when longtime coach David Camic retired last month.
“We’ve had applications that range from right out of college to coaches that have state championships,” Begley said. “We have a state championship coach in Kentucky, we have one who’s won a state championship in Mississippi or Alabama. There’s a lot of interest, and that’s a good thing.”
He said a committee consisting of athletic director Chris LeMonds, another faculty representative, a parent, a player and him met earlier this week to screen the applicants.
Those who made the cut were divided into two stacks, one for coaches who are also teachers and one for paraprofessional coaches, and Begley said there are “three or four” coaches in each stack.
“We’ve not contacted anybody about any interviews. We’ll see what teaching jobs we have open in the next week or two, and if we don’t have any, obviously we’ll have to go with a paraprofessional staff,” he said.
Begley said he hopes to have a coach in place within two weeks.
“It’d be great if we could get it done by July 10th, because school starts August 10th,”¿he said.
Begley said he thinks the job is an attractive one.
“This is just a good area for baseball,” he said.
Camic announced his retirement June 7, ending a 20-year coaching career that included the last 11 seasons at Boyle.
