The Lincoln County boys started the fourth quarter with a flurry of shotmaking and finished it with consistent free throw shooting to defeat Southwestern 63-59 on Tuesday night at Stanford.
Trenton Edgington scored 20 points and Carl-Lewis Cummins and Luke Hill added 14 each for Lincoln (16-11), which beat a Southwestern team that had been tied for the highest win total in the 12th Region.
There were four ties and 12 lead changes in the first three quarter, and the Patriots went in front to stay at 39-37 in the final minute of the third quarter. Hill scored the first basket of the third quarter. The Patriots continued to expand their lead, and two free throws by Micah Ward gave them a 48-41 lead with 4:26 remaining.
Lincoln hit four of its first five shots from the field in the final period to go up 50-43, and the Patriots sealed their fourth win in five games at the free throw line, where they were 20 for 28 overall and 13 for 14 in the final 2 minutes, 3 seconds after Southwestern (20-7) scored five straight points to pull within 50-48.
Cummins hit two foul shots with 52 seconds left to give the Patriots a 54-48 lead, and the Warriors never got closer than four points again. Cummins was 6 for 6, Edgington was 4 for 4 and Hill was 3 for 4 at the line down the stretch.
Lincoln never led by more than four points in the first three periods, and Southwestern’s largest lead was 26-24 at halftime.
Danville 75, Casey County 32 — At Liberty, Danville (11-12) combined hot shooting with effective post play to rout Casey (3-23).
Five players scored in double figures for the Admirals, who made five 3-point goals in the first quarter en route to a 23-8 lead and got 25 points from their starting post players.
“It was a really nice shooting performance,” Danville coach Andrew Zaheri said. “By getting ball inside and establishing a post presence, it helped get us more open 3s.”
Devonta Alcorn had 15 points and Damir Karapandzic had 10 in the post for Danville.
Tryston Ford scored a game-high 16 points, Christian Gateskill-Fuqua added 13 and Rob Caudill had 12 on four 3s for the Admirals. Danville also hit nine of 11 free throws.
Clay Cannon led Casey, which has lost five straight games, with 11 points.
Girls
Mercer County 56, West Jessamine 34 — At Nicholasville, Mercer (21-5, 6-0 46th District) won its 10th straight game and completed a sweep of its district opponents with its second rout of West Jessamine (5-20).
Savannah Taylor had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Titans, who led just 23-17 at halftime after three starters and one reserve fell into foul trouble in the first half.
“We probably needed a game like that,” Mercer coach Chris Souder said. “We really had go deep into our bench, which was probably good for us.”
Catheryne Claunch scored 10 points and Cawood Dedman had four assists for Mercer, which beat West Jessamine 70-44 on Jan. 21.
The Titans shot 36 percent (19 for 53) from the field and were 3 for 22 from 3-point range and 15 for 25 at the foul line.
