Cassidy Martin scored 34 points Saturday to lead the Mercer County girls to a 77-62 victory over Nelson County at Harrodsburg.

It was the highest point total at Mercer for Martin, who transferred from a Tennessee school for her senior year.

Martin made hay at the free-throw line, where she was 9 for 9 and Mercer was 24 for 32.

“She’s just a really good shooter,” Mercer coach Chris Souder said.

Mercer (3-3) opened a 25-13 lead after one quarter and was never threatened by Nelson (5-3).

It was the second win in less than 24 hours for Mercer following back-to-back losses.

“This was a really good win for us. Nelson’s got a really good team, and they’re big. We’ve had a tough week, and it’s really good for us to get back to .500,” Souder said.

Kandace Gash had 14 points and seven rebounds and Heidi Huffman added 12 points for the Titans, who were 9 for 38 from 3-point range and 22 for 59 overall from the field with only eight turnovers.

Cierra Drake led Nelson with 19 points.

Mountain Mission 40, Danville Christian 21 — At Harrodsburg, DCA (6-4) finished 1-1 in its DCA Christmas Invitational after a loss to Mountain Mission (8-1).

Katherine Raines had 12 points and eight rebounds and Becca Tarter had six rebounds for the Warriors.

DCA was just 7 for 20 from the free-throw line.

“Our game plan was to get to the line a lot, and we accomplished that with 20 free throws. We have to make more of them, and we will work on that in practice,” DCA coach Jamie Middleton said. “We played well for the most part against a superior opponent. We got a little fatigued about the middle of the third quarter and their superior depth began to take its toll.”

Bath County 61, Burgin 49 — At Burgin, Burgin (4-4) continued its season-long trend of alternating wins and losses with a loss to Bath (3-4).

The Bulldogs have not put two wins or two losses together so far this season.

Friday’s Games

Mercer County 67, East Jessamine 31 — At Harrodsburg, Mercer won its 46th District opener by outscoring East Jessamine 31-6 in the first quarter.

Martin scored 18 points for Mercer (2-3, 1-0 district), which hit six 3-point goals in the first quarter to leave East Jessamine (3-2, 0-1) behind and finished 8 for 23 from long range.

Catheryne Claunch and Lyric Houston added nine points each for the Titans.

“We got off to a really good start, which allowed us to play a bunch of people ... and we really needed a win,” Souder said.

Whitley County 49, Casey County 35 — At Williamsburg, Casey (2-5) stayed close to unbeaten Whitley (6-0) for three quarters but managed just three points in the final period.

The Rebels were within 38-32 when the fourth quarter began but couldn’t continue to score.

“We had too many turnovers that led to easy baskets in the fourth quarter,” Casey coach Randy Salyers said. “We just did not finish the game very strong. We got tired in the fourth quarter and just kind of shut down.”

Casey fell behind in the first half after missing nine of 13 free throws. The Rebels were 5 for 18 overall at the line.

Christin Terry led Casey with 13 points, and Lakken Miller had five assists.

The Rebels had 17 turnovers.

Danville Christian 43, Sayers Classical 21 — At Harrodsburg, Raines had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead DCA (6-3) to a win in its DCA Christmas Invitational opener.

“Katherine Raines was a force inside, and Sayers had no answer for her,” Middleton said. “It sort of resembled a game of one-upmanship at times with Raines and Courtney LaForest of Sayers, since both teams were having trouble stopping the other team's star player.”
