Meagan Smith of Danville ran a career-best time for the second time in five days to finish 11th Saturday in the Greater Louisville Classic at Louisville.
Smith, a junior in her first season in cross country, ran the 3.1-mile E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park course in 19 minutes, 35 seconds, which was 20 seconds faster than her time Tuesday at Danville in the Central Kentucky Conference Championships.
She leaned at the finish line to beat another local runner, Alex Bunch of Lincoln County, for 11th place.
“Meagan had a great day. She was very pleased, as was I,” Danville coach Chris Verhoven said. “She said, ‘Coach, I sure am glad that we’ve been working on sprints recently, because it really came in handy today.’”
Verhoven said several of the six Danville boys who ran also had personal-best times, including No. 1 runner Calvin Steber, who also plays soccer.
“It was nice to see Calvin have a good day today considering that he’s a part-time cross country runner,” Verhoven said.
