Boyle County suddenly finds itself a game short this season after Hancock County (Tenn.) notified the Rebels Monday that it would not play the game scheduled Oct. 7 at its home field.
“We can’t get hold of anybody down there. We just got an email saying it would be in the best interest of both parties to cancel the game,” said Boyle coach Larry French on Monday night.
“I don’t know what happened. I do not know if they lost a bunch of kids or what. We tried all day to get hold of them and stuff, but couldn’t. I¿do not know what we will end up doing.”
French says there could be a possibility that Class A Harlan might play the Rebels on Sept. 16. That is now an open date for the Rebels.
“We may try to get a game that way and go there which would end up better than going all the way to Tennessee anyway,” French said. “Harlan only has nine games and hopefully we can get it arranged.
“We need to play and hopefully work some things out. You don’t want to go an extra week without a game.”
French said there apparently would be no buyout because Boyle officials don’t think Hancock County ever returned a signed contract.
“We are just going to try and keep contacting them to see what happened,” French said. “Hopefully we can get this all worked out because our kids want to play and need to play.”
Boyle lost to Highlands 35-14 to open the season and will host Allen County-Scottsville on Saturday before playing at Danville Sept. 2 and at John Hardin Sept. 9.
